Achery Places 3rd At State

On February 9th, the Archery Team once again competed in the State Tournament with success. A strong showing gave the Coyotes 2944 points, a mere 148 behind the leader Fallon Young Bowen who scored 3092. Despite not finishing first, the Coyotes scored enough points to qualify for the National Tournament being held in Kentucky.

Two girls scored well enough to land in the top 5 with Vivien Hau coming in 3rd with a score of 251 and Terri Dang in 5th with a score of 247. Kavindu Amarasinghe shot a score of 272 which was tied with the 4th and 5th place top male shooters, but due to the tie breaker rule, he placed 6th overall.

Those unfamiliar with Archery tournaments should know that a perfect score is 300 with points coming from 3 rounds of 5 arrows at the 10 meter line and another 3 rounds of 5 coming from the 15 meter line. Judging by the scores the athletes posted, they did quite well. But always hungry for more, they expect to have a stronger showing next year and will continue to improve from their experiences competing at this level of competition.

DECA State Competion

On February 15th and 16th, the Southwest Career and Technical Academy chapter of DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) will be competing in the Nevada State Conference. This year the event is held at the Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino here in Las Vegas. Over 200 SWCTA students will attend and compete against other members from around the state.

Here are a few of the many competitions available: Business Law and Ethics, Business Services, Principles of Business Administration, Apparel and Accessories Marketing, Hotel and Lodging Management, and Restaurant & Food Service Management. There are also several Team Written Events that include subjects such as: Community Service Project, Creative Marketing, and Entrepreneurship Promotion.

The Nevada State Conference is also an opportunity for students to hone their skills in preparation for the International DECA Competition from April 28-May 1 held in Salt Lake City, UT.

SWCTA DECA students work hard to prepare themselves for the world of business. Many students give up their before and after school hours, as well as weekends to work and prepare for competitions such as this. But they’re not working hard just for a competition, the skills that they learn in DECA translate to real-world situations and help them prepare to take on life and their chosen career.

Let’s wish them good luck on their competition and give them our support.

SWCTA to host ProStart

On February 15 & 16, SWCTA will host the Nevada ProStart Invitational. Winners from this competition have the opportunity for several scholarships and the honor of representing our state at Nationals.

ProStart is a Culinary curriculum created by the National Restaurant Association. Chef Linda is a ProStart Educator, and this school year SWCTA became a ProStart school which gives our students the opportunity to receive college credit , participate in ProStart competitive events and  earn the ProStart Honor Cord at graduation by completing the requirements for the ProStart Certificate of Achievement which is nationally recognized.

The competition includes a culinary event, cake decorating, carving and edible centerpiece as well as a management competition. Juniors Lacey Long, Brittany Chopp and Blake Sundin will be representing SWCTA in the hot food category. This is an intense competition where the teams create their own three course menu, execute it in one hour while cooking only on two burners. Lets wish them luck!

FCCLA to Compete

On February 10, Southwest Career and Technical Academy will be hosting the first CCSD FCCLA Regional Conference. Students from around the Valley will participate in competitive events  including culinary, hospitality, fashion, interior design, child development and independent living. SWCTA students are preparing to compete in the culinary, hospitality and interior design events.

Membership in the Professional Academy and Design Academy for FCCLA is over 75 students.  Our chapter members  will also prepare to represent CCSD at the FCCLA State Conference on March 13 in Reno, NV.

CTSO Food Drive

Around the holiday season, there’s always an out pour of giving. The SWCTA Student Organizations are no different. This year, there’s a twist. Each Student Organization is competing with each other to see who can give the most items. All of the items were donated to Three Square food bank, a local charitable organization.

Clubs including FBLA, FCCLA, DECA, HOSA, Skills USA, Student Council, National Honor Society, and Key Club participated. PACE, POST, and a surprise entry by Mrs. Boivie’s class, brought the total number of items to over 2000. This was a huge contribution and helped out a worthy cause.

In our current economy, there can never be too much giving. The CTSO’s of Southwest Career and Technical Academy have shown that with a little effort, big hearts, and a little competition, you can make a big difference in someone’s holiday season.

More information about this create event can be found on the Southwest Shadow.

FCCLA Gingerbread Houses

This winter, FCCLA and the Culinary Arts students competed in the 2011 WinterFest Celebration in Henderson by creating one-of-a-kind gingerbread houses. The yearly event hosted by the city of Henderson, drew entries from all over the valley.

The event was held on December 9-10th at the Pinnacle Building inside the Henderson Convention Center. This year’s themes are “An Old Fashioned Christmas Delight”, “Winter Wonderland” and/or the “City of Henderson”. Students worked tirelessly for weeks during class and volunteered to stay late after school to complete their creations.

Despite all the hard work, none of the SWCTA entries received awards. However, the students are more determined than ever to come back strong in 2012 and bring home some hardware for their efforts.

Despite not winning any awards, students were still able to feel good by giving during the holiday season, donating their creations to Opportunity Village for their Magical Forest display. Overall, Chef Burns was happy with her students’ performance and is looking to do even greater next year.

Flip the Script

On November 21st, the students at SWCTA got an incredible treat. The day after wining AMA’s Best New Artist award, Hot Chelle Rae performed live in front of the student body here at Southwest Career and Technical Academy.

The concert was a reward won by the student body for its work with Flip the Script held by KLCU 98.5. Flip the Script is an anti-bullying campaign that the students became a part of while working on a class project in Mrs. Penrod’s Freshman Studies class. Students created various mediums to spread the word about anti-bullying as a class project, and then took it a step further by submitting material to the Flip the Script contest.

The winner of the contest was selected by student votes. With an overwhelming number of votes, SWCTA came out on top to claim the free concert. Student response at the concert was outstanding and everyone had a great time.

Forthcoming Success!

On Friday, October 13th, the Professional and Design Academies faced off in two fierce battles for the Coyote Cup in Flag Football. The Girls PA came out with a great effort controlling the field while scoring 2 touchdowns and coming out on top with a victory.

The Boy’s game was hard fought with DA scoring early, taking advantage of an early interception but could not convert the extra point. PA came back with a long charge down the field scoring a touchdown of their own. However, they also could not convert the extra point. Time expired and the game was finally decided by a single game of  Roshambo. Rock crushed scissors for the win and new champions were crowned, Professional Academy.

Saturday, October 14th was SWCTA’s first Senior class Forthcoming Dance held at the Keep Memory Alive center and it was a complete success. Over 700 students came out to celebrate the event at this magnificent venue. Students enjoyed the night and celebrated until the clock struck 10pm. Staff and students alike enjoyed the evening of dancing and music. Now how are we going to top this for next year?
